Type Locality and Naming

The naming section for the Jiyuan Gr, of which this is the middle formation, is located in the area from Zhangzhuang through Niezhuang to the Nanyao Reservoir, Jiyuan County, Henan. Named by the 104 Party of the Division of Exploration, Ministry of Petroleum, in 1959.


Lithology and Thickness

Mainly grayish, massive arkosic sandstone with brownish mudstone, the base of which has also conglomerate with then beds of gypsum, calcareous concretions and calcareous veinlets. The total thickness is ca. 578 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably underlain by the Nanyao Fm.

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Yuzhuang Fm.

Fossils

Tis formation contains the ostracods Candoniella albicans and Ilyocypris errabundis and more than ten species of charophytes such as Grovesichara gonganensis, Sphaerochara granulifera and Charites sinensis. Fossil vertebrates include Kansuchelys sp. etc. In addition there are also teeth of canivores of mammals.
